Whether you are leasing, renting, or purchasing a mobile MRI, it is important to consider there are two main components of a mobile MRI unit: 1. The MRI scan machine 2. The medical imaging trailer. Both will require maintenance and service so it is important to plan accordingly as the maintenance of the trailer itself can play a significant factor over long term leases or in extreme weather conditions.
Mobile MRI considerations:
Condition of tires and treadwear – Whether your mobile MRI is stationary or will be on the move often, assessing tire condition helps to avoid future issues with stability or during transportation.
Chiller functionality – Every mobile MRI unit is outfitted with a chiller (sometimes two) that affects air conditioning functionality, along with supplying cold water to the MRI magnet to cool the gradients. Ensure your chiller is outfitted to handle the additional load that the extreme summer heat brings.
Backup generator – While only used sparingly during transportation or during emergency power outages, it is essential to asses the condition of your backup generators and ensure they are fueled accordingly.
Trailer RF seal integrity – Ensure the MRI scan room, operator room and equipment room pass all RF leak tests. While we are hovering around the subject, also ensure your trailer is properly and securely grounded (preferably a solid earth ground connection). I know it’s not really relevant to this article but this can save you a headache in the future.
Software version – If possible, select a platform your MRI technologists are already familiar with. If not, schedule and applications specialist for a couple of days of training with the new system.
Applications training – Do Not Overlook This! I say it in the most respectful sense. Whether you are contracting an outside MRI applications specialist, or have negotiated as part of the terms of your contract, it is imperative to secure knowledgeable applications specialists to ensure a smooth transition for your MRI technologists. The only exception to this would be if your replacement system is the same MRI model and software version that your MRI technologists are currently trained on.
