GE MRI ZIP 512: Enhance image resolution without increasing scan time.

This article provides detailed information about the ZIP 512 option (z512) available on GE MRI systems. GE healthcare introduced this option when they released the GE Signa Excite MRI system, and it has since become a standard installation in subsequent models. Read more below.

What is GE MRI ZIP 512?

ZIP 512 is a powerful reconstruction technique that allows a 256×256 image to be transformed into a more detailed 512×512 matrix. Zero-fill interpolation processing does not create resolution but rather improves the apparent resolution of the image. It is similar to selecting a 256×128 acquisition matrix and displaying the images as a 256×256 matrix.

How Does ZIP 512 work?

ZIP 512 enhances resolution while keeping the pixel size the same as routine protocols. This ensures there is no change in scan time while achieving a higher resolution.

Additionally, it can help recover spatial resolution by increasing the field of view (FOV) or decreasing the phase matrix, which ultimately increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Scan Considerations

However, it’s important to consider certain factors when utilizing this reconstruction technique. While it may result in a slight decrease in SNR compared to a 256×256 matrix, the SNR of a scan with z512 is still significantly higher than that of a scan with a 512×512 acquisition matrix.

Moreover, ZIP 512 can enhance the apparent image resolution, potentially making truncation artifacts more noticeable. To mitigate this, one can increase the phase matrix value up to 256 or decrease the FOV.

Keep in mind that images reconstructed with ZIP 512 may take longer and require more disk storage space compared to 256 images, as the additional reconstruction time and storage needs are similar to those of acquired 512 images.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that selecting a frequency matrix value greater than 256 renders ZIP 512 ineffective since it is already utilizing reconstruction at 512.

Overview

You can utilize ZIP as an optional reconstruction technique to achieve the appearance of increased in-plane resolution. It is important to note that zero-filling enhances the apparent image resolution but does not actually create resolution.

When utilizing ZIP 512, it is recommended to make selections based on your specific clinical needs. Please ensure that you set the imaging parameters appropriately, which includes selecting a compatible mode and PSD.
