MRI Power On Procedure

This guide provides a detailed overview of how to power on a GE MRI system using an ACGD PDU cabinet. Always consult the system-specific operator manual for verification of MRI power-on procedures before proceeding.

How To Power On MRI

GE with ACGD PDU cabinet

Step 1: Verify System Status

Before initiating the power-on process, ensure the MRI scanner is not in an idle state. Move the mouse and press the spacebar to check for a response. If the system does not respond, confirm that the PC in the operator console is powered off. Open the front cover of the PC to verify that all LEDs are off.

Step 2: Access the MRI Main Disconnect Panel

Locate the MRI main disconnect panel in the MRI equipment room. This is a large white electrical panel mounted on the wall, labeled “MRI Main Disconnect” or “A1 Main Disconnect.” The main disconnect receives a 480-volt connection from the facility and distributes power to MRI subsystems.

Activate the main disconnect by ensuring the incoming power knife switch is in the upright position. Once powered, press the two green buttons labeled Main Power On and PDU Power to supply power to the MRI PDU cabinet.

Step 3: Activate the ACGD PDU Cabinet

Proceed to the ACGD PDU cabinet, which houses the GE MRI power distribution system. Identify the power selector switch and the large red and green buttons on the cabinet’s lower half.

  • Reset the Power Selector Switch: For systems powered off using the red power-off button, reset the switch by lifting it counterclockwise to the horizontal position. Then, flip the switch downward to the vertical position to supply power to the MRI system.
  • Press the EMO Reset Button: After resetting the selector switch, press the green button labeled EMO Reset on the PDU cabinet. This step activates multiple MRI subsystems, including scan room interface functions. Listen for a click and the startup noise of the gradient fan assemblies to confirm subsystem power.

Step 4: Power On the Operator Console

Return to the MRI operator console. By this time, the PC should begin booting into the application environment. Wait approximately four minutes for the process to complete.

  • If the system does not auto-boot, verify that the GOC power switch (located at the bottom left corner of the console) is in the “on” position.
  • Press the PC power button to start the HP computer manually.

Step 5: Final System Initialization

Once the login screen appears (after about five minutes), enter the operator login credentials to access the applications. Allow 10–15 minutes for the GE MRI system to establish communication with all controllers. During this time, avoid interacting with the system until the white initialization screen disappears and the TPS reset is successful.

With the system fully initialized, you can now proceed with the daily quality assurance MRI scan. For further assistance or additional resources on GE MRI systems, consider exploring our other guides.
